Meaning

Muhammad Ali is the archive's central convergence: boxer, gloves, performance, icon, and resolve all pass through him. The ring he stands in is never just a ring — Leifer's aerial photograph shows it plainly: a white square held inside a dark crowd, equal parts altar, stage, courtroom, and board game. Bellows painted the spectacle a century earlier; the Esquire Saint Sebastian cover made the martyrdom literal — arrows in the champion, celebrity as persecution. Parks' bandaged hands show the ritual underneath: wrapping before the gloves, preparation as prayer.

Ali was also a painter — and so was his father, Cassius Clay Sr., a sign painter and muralist (a Sr. with no Jr. in the ring name he gave away). The Art by Ali gallery below holds the convergence's proof: his Under the Sun (1978) and this archive's Under the Sun were painted half a century apart under the same light.
