Performance is the body accepting an audience. Boxing, stand-up, skating, cartoon violence, parade, ritual, and pop image all share the same stage problem.

Meaning

Performance begins when a body accepts that it is being seen. The action may be boxing, skating, preaching, posing, joking, singing, fighting, or failing, but the structure is the same: a body enters a frame and becomes answerable to a room.

The archive is suspicious of performance but not against it. Performance can be fake ritual, but it can also become the only way to make something real. Christopher pretending to skateboard is empty until he actually puts the board down. Boxing is ritual until the body believes the fire.

Performance is therefore close to exposure and close to contact. It can trap the body in a role, but it can also make a private crisis visible enough to be shared.
